I am putting out the word that on October 27th, 2008, my suitcase was stolen in Montreal out of the trunk of a friend’s car. I am hoping that if anyone sees any of these pieces, you will contact the Montreal police at (514) 280-0120. I would love to have them back and there is a reward being offered for their return. I was even interviewed on the CBC about this very sad loss.
The suitcase contained six ganseys: Grace’s Cardigan, the White Gansey, Chelsea’s Heart Gansey, Snakes and Ladders, Poppleton, and At Sea, as well as my Fair Isle Bag. You can view these on this page of my website.
All 24 of the little class samplers which I use to teach my classes were also in the bag and are shown here. (Some of the photos are older version of the actual samplers stolen, but look very similar.) In addition, two pairs of Latvian mittens which were gifts from friends, five single Latvian mittens which I had knitted for classes, and two out-of-print Latvian mitten books were in the case as well as other minor swatches used in my teaching. I appreciate any and all help in the retrieval of this huge body of work. Many thanks!

Oh my gosh Beth, any of those would be a loss for anyone given the time, etc. that went into them. But all at once! That’s your livelihood.
If it would help, I could dig out samples from a few of the classes I’ve taken with you so you’d have samples for future classes.

Oh NO! I can’t imagine how you must be feeling right now. If the authorities are unable to locate, perhaps there will be folks who can volunteer to help knit replacements? Regardless, I’m thinking good thoughts for you and hoping they’re recovered STAT.

This is outrageous and embarassing! I was so happy that you had come to Canada and I was able to be in your courses in Montreal.
But to hear about this loss, is terrible!
I sure hope you will still come to Ottawa in November, 2009. I also hope your suitcase is returned.
Thank you for the wonderful, wonderful sessions in Montreal. I enjoyed them so much!

Oh how terrible. I hope you’re able to recover your belongings. I have a twined-knit project from your class that you’re welcome to have. Let me know if you’d like me to send it to you.

Beth, this is just so sad. I’m so sorry this happened. I’ll be in your classes at Olema this week. I’m sure we will miss your samples, which are always such a treat to see.
This is a long shot, but there is a Craig’s list Lost & Found for Montreal – you might try posting a descrption there of what was stolen and see if you get any nibbles. It’s here: http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/laf/
Since it is Montreal, maybe a translation into French might reach another audience?

That’s awful. Are you sure it was a theft, and not a mistake? There wasn’t a leftover bag that looked like yours lying around?

Kate, sadly this was not an airport loss, this was someone breaking into my car while I was touring Beth around the city. There is a slim hope that the thieves will discard the suitcase as there is no street value for them and that some kind person will find it and return the items to Beth for whom there is priceless value!
Please send good wishes Beth’s way for a speedy recovery and if anyone has samples from any of her classes that they could part with I am sure Beth would appreciate them–just check first so efforts aren’t duplicated.
And Spinnity, a posting on Craig’s List is going up at this very moment– will try posting on Kijiji and Freecycle as well!

Beth, I don’t suppose one of the books lost was, Latvian Mittens by Lizbeth Upitis, was it? If it was I do have a copy and it is yours if you need it to replace your copy. Just let me know.
